International Profile
Düsseldorf is a cosmopolitan, dynamic and welcoming city at the heart of Europe. It is not only the capital of Germany’s most populous federal state, but also the location for the headquarters of many European and international companies. The nearby airport and good rail connections ensure easy access – which is one of the reasons why Düsseldorf is twinned with so many other cities and home to the third-largest Japanese community in Europe.
Heinrich Heine University is a key contributor to international life in the city.
In the Erasmus programme, it collaborates with more than 200 partners in Europe and beyond to offer young people the opportunity to undertake study or traineeship exchanges. Since 2020, HHU has been a member of the European University Alliance “UNIVERSEH – European Space University for Earth and Humanity” with partner universities in Belgium, France, Italy, Poland, Sweden and Luxembourg. It has also been a member of the Ghana-NRW University Alliance since 2023. In addition, HHU maintains partnerships with around 30 renowned universities worldwide, including US universities such as the University of California, Davis and the American University in Washington D.C., Keio and Waseda Universities in Tokyo, as well as cooperations in Eastern Europe with e.g. Charles University in Prague and the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.
Heinrich Heine University offers an excellent research environment in the faculties, the internal/external research facilities and many third-party-funded collaborative projects. Several hundred international researchers from all over the world come to HHU every year for research stays. The broad range of services offered by our Welcome Center for researchers helps them settle in and start concentrating on their research/teaching activities as quickly as possible. We strongly believe that we can only master the major challenges of our times by cooperating across national borders and academic fields.
Almost 4,000 of our full-time students on campus come from abroad. The International Office helps you integrate and offers specific support and intercultural exchanges on campus. All this helps us ensure that our graduates not only gain the academic expertise, but also the intercultural and other skills needed to be fit for a career on the international labour market.

International Partnerships
International Partner Universities
HHU maintains many partnerships with international universities and institutions. They are the basis for scientific exchange and the framework that enables our students to study and earn credit at a foreign university that is transferable to their home institution.
