New Senate at HHU
Professor Knoefel elected as Chair

Some have known each other for some time, others only know each other by sight: The new Senate of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU), which was elected in summer 2023, held its constituent meeting today. At the meeting, Professor Dr Wolfram Trudo Knoefel, Director of the Düsseldorf University Hospital Department of General, Visceral and Paediatric Surgery and holder of the Chair at the Faculty of Medicine, was once again elected as Chair of the Senate. It is his third term of office. The Deputy Chair is Dr Ursula Kessen. The Executive Committee also includes Robin Raffael Solinus and René Michalski as representatives of the students and technical & administrative staff respectively.

The new HHU Senate met for the first time on 17 October 2023.

The Senate is an important body, which comprises all status groups at the University. It discusses and advises on various matters relating to the organisation of the University and is involved in all fundamental decisions at HHU. The Senate is also involved in appointments to other central bodies and university management positions, and sees its task as supporting these bodies in the interests of the University.

The Senate faces further challenges, such as involvement in shaping the new University Development Plan or closer cooperation with the faculties against the background of increasingly scarce financial resources. The Chair comments: “Above all, the various aspects of sustainability, foundations for excellent research and training, environmental protection, diversity, health and development offering equal opportunities remain relevant and we will continue to support the development of the University in this regard.”

University President, Professor Dr Anja Steinbeck, congratulated the newly elected Executive Committee: “When all groups at HHU work together in an appreciative manner, we succeed in moving our University forward. The Senate always provides important impulses and I look forward to having this body as a reliable advisor and sparring partner in the future.” She also expressed her thanks for the successful term of office recently completed.
