Uniting different approaches across theoretical-quantitative linguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, phonetics and computational linguistics, the Research Unit deals with the question of what the pronunciation of derived and compound words (e.g. analyzable, exactly, butterfly) can reveal about the representation, processing and structure of complex words.
For the second funding period, the Research Unit has grown from five to seven projects. One project is ending, three projects have been added, including two that are led by young researchers from HHU. Dr. Julia Muschalik (Department of English and American Studies) will examine the relationship between orthography, pronunciation and morphology in English, and Dr. Dinah Baer-Henney (Department of Language and Information) will, together with Prof. Plag, lead a project on the phonetic realization of word-final S in English. The total sum granted by the DFG for the new funding period is 2.7 million Euros.
Heinrich Heine University of Düsseldorf takes part in the Research Unit with five projects (hosted by the Department of English and American Studies and by the Department of General Linguistics). Additional projects are run at the University of Tübingen by Alexander-von-Humboldt-Professor Harald Baayen, and at MPI for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen by Dr. Louis ten Bosch and Prof. Mirjam Ernestus.
